    High cloramine levels

I wanted to proactively address the high cloramine levels noticed today. I notified the head guard & management. They had just finished a scheduled chem check and all levels were normal. They promptly started adding to the water level (to help dilute plus to ready for another backwash). The pool asst superintendent called me. They increased their backwashing schedule at the beginning of the week to EVERY OTHER DAY. That's a huge amount of water being pumped out of the pool & having to be replenished. They also have a dehumidifier that went out last week (they are awaiting the ordered parts) that may be a contributing factor. Please know that BBAC staff & management are following procedure & doing all they can to reduce the unpleasant side effects.

When chlorine reacts with organic compounds (like sweat, urine, or lotions), it can form chloramines. However, it is similar to pollen in the air, as it affects everyone differently. Some have little reaction to it, and some can't stop coughing, have burning eyes, possible skin irritation. Chloramines generally hover in gas form at the surface of the water. So, while chlorine levels can be normal, cloramines can cause reactions.

The pool's protocol is to perform more backwashes than usual to rebalance the water's concentrations. Please be aware that this is not a one-time, overnight solution. It takes several backwashes, over several days.

Coach would never put anyone in harm’s way. Remember, our kids are swimming too. Please talk to your kids about getting out & getting fresh air in the hallway when needed – Coach would never penalize anyone for that.

And while this isn't the only reason for increased chloramines, encourage your swimmer to use the restroom before practice.... Also, consider bathing / quick washcloths to stinky areas before jumping in – yes, teenagers, I'm talkin’ to y'all!

We apologize for any inconveniences this situation causes. We are doing our best to rectify the situation as a team.
